     DALLAS, TX – On Friday, August 23, 2024, Brian McKay was sworn in by Senior District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater to serve as a United Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court, Northern District of Texas at the Dallas division. A formal investiture ceremony has not yet been scheduled.

     Judge McKay obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in 1994 and a Master of Arts degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from Sam Houston State University in 1996. During the interim of five years between his completion of graduate school and commencement of law school, he served as an adult probation officer in Hunt County, Texas. In 2004, he received his Juris Doctor from the University of Tulsa College of Law. Upon graduation from law school, Judge McKay served as law clerk to United States District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater from 2004 to 2005. Following his clerkship, Judge McKay worked as an associate with Haynes and Boone, LLP, in its Dallas office from 2005 to 2011. He then served as an Assistant United States Attorney from 2011 until May 2019, when he joined Trinity Industries, Inc. in Dallas to serve as the Chief Compliance Officer. In October of 2019, Judge McKay returned to public service at the U.S. Attorney’s Office as Deputy Chief of the Appellate Division until his appointment to the bench.

     Judge McKay is a member of the State Bar of Texas and is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth and Tenth Circuits and the United States District Court for the Northern, Eastern, Western, and Southern Districts of Texas. He has published numerous articles and served as the Editor-in-Chief of the Tulsa Law Review.

     A magistrate judge merit selection panel appointed by the court was engaged to review each application and conduct interviews with applicants deemed most qualified for the position. The merit selection panel was comprised of Erin Nealy Cox, Esq., Chairperson, Ronald W.
