Increases in the CJA Hourly Rates and Compensation Maximums for Counsel

Rates: Effective January 1, 2020, the hourly rates for CJA appointed counsel have been increased to $152 (non-capital) and $195 (capital).

The non-capital case compensation maximums have therefore increased as follows:

  • $11,800 (previously $11,500) for a felony
  • $8,400 (previously $8,200) for an appeal
  • $3,400 (previously $3,300) for a misdemeanor, and
  • (The $2,500 compensation maximum for “other” representations does not change.)

Effective Date: These changes apply to a voucher if CJA-compensable work was furnished on or after January 1, 2020.

The attorney compensation thresholds that trigger Fifth Circuit review in capital cases have not changed.

Rates and compensation maximums for investigators, experts, and other service providers have not changed.
