On
May 26, 1846, the first federal judge in Texas was appointed to hold
court in Galveston, with original jurisdiction over the whole state,
the District of Texas. The state was later divided into two districts,
Eastern and Western, on February 21, 1857. On February 24, 1879, Texas
was divided into three districts, thus creating the Northern District
of Texas, which consisted of Waco, Dallas, and Graham divisions.
On April 10, 1879, Andrew Phelps
McCormick was appointed as the first U.S. District Judge for the
Northern District of Texas. The first Northern District Clerk of
Court, J.H. Finks, was appointed on May 23, 1879.
On June 11, 1896, the Fort Worth
and San Angelo divisions were established in the Northern District,
and court was transferred from Graham to Abilene. On March 11, 1902,
four districts were established in Texas, adding the Southern District
of Texas. Waco was transferred to the Western District. The Northern
District then consisted of Abilene, Dallas, Fort Worth, and San
Angelo divisions. On February 14, 1908, the Amarillo division was
established, and on February 26, 1917, the Wichita Falls division
was established in the Northern District. Finally, the Lubbock Division
was established in the Northern District of Texas on May 26, 1928.
